" I do have a responsibility to keep my inventions from evil hands – but I have a greater responsibility to oppose that evil any way I can. So, Tony Stark may have done his bit out there, but only Iron Man can do what has to be done... So... I guess Iron Man will be around for a while."
— Iron Man

Tony Stark (of Earth-616), better known as Iron Man, is a founding member of the Avengers and the Illuminati, a former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a close ally and occasional mentor of Spider-Man. He later became Mark One the leader of the A.I. Army.

History

Early life

After the death of his parents when he was 21, Stark inherited Stark Enterprises.

Becoming Iron Man

After being wounded while in a war zone, he built an armored suit that would help keep him alive. Stark helped to organize the superhero team, The Avengers early in his career as a superhero. Originally, Tony Stark had no powers of his own, and he depended on his armored suit for all of his super abilities, until he injected himself the Extremis virus, gaining new abilities and intellect as well as being able to control his armor mentally. In it, he can fly and can shoot blasts of repulsor energy from his hands and chest. The armor has boosted his reaction time and enhanced his ability to heal.

Civil War

In the Civil War storyline, Tony assisted Spider-Man and his family. Peter Parker came to regard Stark as a mentor, became his assistant, and accepted a new technologically enhanced costume from him. Tony also convinced Spider-Man to unmask and go public with his identity which he did and regret.

However, Peter's feelings of being manipulated and unease about the "rightness" of Stark's cause grew until Tony revealed a prison for superhumans he and Reed Richards had built in the Negative Zone.

When Spider-Man attempted to escape from Stark Tower, along with his family, he attacked Tony, who had confronted him. Due to Spider-Man's override of the suit given to him by Tony, and a unexpected intervention by the Punisher, Spider-Man managed to escape with his family and was considered a traitor by Tony and the Pro-Registration side.
