Civil War II is a comic book crossover event published by Marvel Comics that began its publication from May 2016 to December 2016. The event is meant to serve as a sequel to the original civil war event that was published between 2006-2007. It is known as the Second Superhuman Civil War or just the Second Civil War.
Unlike the original superhero civil war which dealt with concepts of Freedom vs. Security, Civil War II deal with the superhero community being divided over the concepts of determinism vs. free will.
Publication History
On December 7, 2015; Marvel Comics announced the preliminary details of the event. They revealed that event would debut in June 2016 and serve as a the sequel to the original Civil War event with Brian Michael Bendis serving as head writer, David Marquez serving as head artist, Justin Ponsor serving as head colorist, and Tom Brevoort serving as head editor of the events core series.
Tom Brevoort, who served as the editor for first Civil War series, stated "The attempt was to craft the conflict so that each side held a valid and defensible position, so that a reader could fundamentally agree with either one side or the other, with neither being painted as absolutely right or absolutely wrong. While the issues involved are different, we'll be taking the same approach to Civil War II."
Brian Michael Bendis, who wrote The New Avengers tie-in issues for the original Civil War event, stated that he only agreed to write the sequel after Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, the creators of the original Civil War event, turned the offer to write the sequel.
In an interview with the New York Daily News, Brian Michael Bendis and Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso revealed that the idea for Civil War II was conceived at one of Marvel's semi-annual editorial retreats. They also discussed the premise for the event with Bendis explaining that "People's personal accountability is the theme of this one... From the way cops are acting on camera, to the way people talk to each other online."
Bendis also revealed in a different interview that he and David Marquez will be laying the foundation for the event in the second volume of Invincible Iron Man which they currently work together on. On January 15, 2016; Marvel revealed that a Civil War II prelude issue will be release as part of Free Comic Book Day 2016.
Solicit Synopsis
An Inhuman with the power to accurately predict the outcome of future events comes to the attention of the world. This power divides the superhero community on how best to utilize the information, with Captain Marvel wanting to profile future crimes and attacks before they occur and Iron Man believing that "the punishment cannot come before the crime." The situation comes to a head, when it is predicted that one of the heroes will be the cause of major destruction and forces the others to make a difficult decision.
Notes
- It was originally teased that the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, would be leading the faction opposing Iron Man's in the conflict just as the original Captain America opposed Iron Man in the first Civil War, but it was later revealed that Sam would actually be part of Iron Man's faction and the opposing faction would actually be lead by Captain Marvel.
