When Daniel was nine, Wendell wanted to return to K'un L'un with his new family via a portal that opened every ten years. During the journey up the mountain, Daniel slipped off the path, holding on to his mother and father. Meachum, who was on the trip and wanted to take over Wendell's business, forced Wendell to fall to his death. Heather rejected Meachum's help, preferring to journey without him or die.

The Road to the Iron Fist[]

When Daniel's mother dies saving him from wolves before they get to K'un L'un, Daniel expresses his desire for vengeance,. Daniel is trained by Yü-Ti, as Daniel trains his fists by plunging them into buckets of sand, gravel, and rock to toughen them and being taught various fighting styles.

At age 19, Daniel attains the power of the Iron Fist by throwing himself against the scar of Shou-Lao the Dragon, which burns a dragon tattoo into his chest. Having killed Shou-Lao, he enters its cave and plunges his fists into a brazier containing the creature's molten heart, emerging with the power of the Iron Fist.

Heroes for Hire[]

After Daniel claimed his inheritance as a full partner in Rand-Meachum, Inc, he started up a business as a crime fighter with his good friend Luke Cage called "Heroes for Hire" where he and Luke Cage accepted jobs as bodyguards or detectives for money.

After he was freed from the Negative Zone Prison, he joined Captain America's team for the final battle against Iron Man's team.

After the arrest of Captain America, Daniel joined the first team of New Avengers with Luke Cage, Spider-Man, and others. He left for many reasons, but allied with them often, such as helping the team rescue Luke Cage from Norman Osborn.
