Frances was a victim of an abusive mother who became addicted to drugs, and grew up to become a drug dealer herself. She was shot by a police officer and this added to her mental illness. The trauma eventually triggered her latent mutant sound powers and she began to use those powers to hurt people as Shriek. Shriek was eventually captured and sent to the Ravencroft Institute. There she met Carnage and cheered him on when he was slaughtering people in his attempt to escape. The two became partners and Shriek displayed another mutant power, the ability to sense and amplify people’s negative emotions, a power she used to drive people to commit crimes as she and Carnage went on a killing spree. Shriek was captured by Spider-Man and returned to Ravencroft when Carnage abandoned her.
