Jonathan Hickman first major contribution to comic books came in 2006 during his time as Image Comics when he created the series The Nightly News which in 2008 was nominated for an Eisner Award for "Best Limited Series".

Not long after his success with The Nightly News, Jonathan wrote his first story for Marvel Comics entitled "N'Kantu, the Living Mummy: MustDie/EatSoul" which was published as part of Marvel's Legion of Monsters series.

In 2009, Jonathan was asked by Marvel to collaborate with writer Brian Michael Bendis and editor Tom Brevoort on a new series they were developing called "Secret Warriors". The series was conceived following the conclusion of Marvel's Secret Invasion event and followed the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D, Nick Fury and his newly formed team of super-powered operatives as they deal with the aftermath of the Skrull Invasion's through various acts of espionage.

For the Dark Reign event, Jonathan collaborated with artist Sean Chen to produce the Dark Reign: Fantastic Four limited series. The limited series was so well received that Marvel decided to make Jonathan the new head writer of the core Fantastic Four series beginning with the series' 570th issue.

Following the apparent death of the Human Torch at the end of the series then final issue; Jonathan and artist Steve Epting a new series "FF" (short for Future Foundation) which for a time replaced Fantastic Four as the core Fantastic Four series. In this new series, the 3 remaining Fantastic Four decided to expand their roster through the establishment of a school for the next generation of super scientists and by making longtime ally Spider-Man a official member of the team.

Due to the immense success of his work on Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four, and FF; Jonathan is now considered one of the best and most unique writers in the entire comic book industry. This success led to Jonathan being made the in head writer for Avengers and New Avengers series as part of Marvel's company-wide Marvel NOW! relaunch after his run of Fantastic Four and FF concluded in 2012.

During his run on Avengers and New Avengers, Jonathan masterminded and wrote 2 Marvel events. The first event, Infinity, was a company wide crossover event that dealt with the Mad Titan Thanos attacking the Earth while most of the Avengers are off in space uniting the universe against the Builders.

The second event, Time Runs Out, was a crossover event that was told through the various Avengers titles that were being published at the time which served as the grand finale of a massive Avengers saga that he had been working on since he became the head writer for the 2 core Avengers series nearly 3 years prior.

Currently, Jonathan is currently writing the most recent Marvel event, Secret Wars, which will lay the foundation of the new Marvel Multiverse following the old Multiverse's collapse at the end of Time Runs Out.
