Knull (of Earth-616) was a primordial god of darkness and evil who ruled over the endless abyss that existed before time began. To help further his crusade to eliminate all the other deities in the universe, Knull created the Symbiotes thus making him their god.
Eventually he was overthrown and imprisoned by the very Symbiotes he created and now seeks to free himself from his centuries long prison, so he can regain control of his creations and resume his crusade.
