The New Avengers (of Earth-616) was originally a division of A.I.M. primarily made up of former members of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Avengers team that united under Sunspot's leadership in order to proactively find a solution to the Incursions. Following the events of Secret Wars, the team now focuses on performing international rescue operations

After Steve Rogers was reinstated as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Steve had the Avengers repurposed into enforcers for the spy organization in order to help with his hunt for the Illuminati. Unfortunately for Steve, many of the Avengers disagreed with the idea of hunting fellow heroes and the extreme lengths that Steve was willing to go to in order to bring the Illuminati to justice. This resulted in most of the members choosing to quit the team rather then continue working under Steve.
Feeling that this war between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Illuminati was a waste of time with the threat of the Incursions now common knowledge, many of these former Avengers choose to proactively tackle the threat by forming a new Avengers team that would devote all its efforts to finding a way to stop the Incursions.
In order to better achieve their goals, the team's leader Sunspot used his vast fortune to purchase the organization known as A.I.M. so that they might use A.I.M.'s scientific resources to develop ways to combat the Incursions.
The Search for Answers[]
As the new Scientist Supreme of A.I.M., Sunspot's first act was to have the A.I.M. scientists develop a machine that could be used to transport members of his team across the Multiverse, in hopes of finding the source of the decay. For the team that would be sent to investigate the cause of the Incursions, Sunspot selected a group of heroes primarily consisting of cosmic level beings such as Nightmask, the Ex Nihilii, and Abyss as they were the only Avengers who could navigate the path leading to the Incursion's source and were also the only ones who would be able to properly analyze whatever clues or evidence they find along the way. Sunspot also included some of his team's heavy hitters as part of the exploration team as they would be the best equipped to deal with whatever resistance they encountered along the way.
The first major breakthrough the exploratory team made in discovering the cause of the Incursions was gaining access to the headquarters of the Black Priests, one of the third parties involved in the "Game of Worlds". The exploration team original believed that the Black Priests were their enemies, as the priests willingly destroyed alternate versions of Earth, and immediately engaged them in battle. The battle continued until the leader of the Black Priests revealed himself to be the Doctor Strange from the exploration team's native reality. Felling that they could at least give him the benefit of the doubt, the team stopped attacking Doctor Strange's fellow priests and demanded that he give them answers. He explained to them that the Black Priest's were a third party that was forced into fighting a war between two mysterious opposing forces known only as the Ivory Kings and Rabum Alal respectively.
