"People still need help--here and all over the globe. People need to to know that someone's got a handle on this."
— Prodigy

Richard "Ritchie" Gilmore (of Earth-616), also known as Prodigy, is a superhero that was a member of the teenager superteam known as the Slingers. Richard adopted the Prodigy name and costume after Spider-Man got rid of it when he cleared his name of a supposed murder.

History

Richard Gilmore was a great athlete and the captain of his college wrestling team. However, he found that winning wresting matches were too easy and nothing posed a challenge for him anymore. So when he was approached by the elderly vigilante known formerly known as the Black Marvel, and was offered a magical version of Spider-Man's prodigy costume and the chance to fight supervillains, Richard jumped at the chance. With the suit granting him superhuman powers, Richard became the Prodigy and viewed himself as the leader of the Slingers. However as a leader, he was cold and heartless, as he wasn't bothered by the death of his teammate Dusk during her initiation. He later left his teammates Ricochet and Hornet for dead when they were trapped in a collapsed tunnel.

Prodigy was attacked by Hornet and Ricochet when they escaped and during the battle he learned that Black Marvel was actually a villain. Crushed that ha had been manipulated, he left the Slingers.

Prodigy would later be arrested by Iron Man when he refused to comply with the new Superhuman Registration Act. Prodigy became part of the Initiative to get his charges reduced and was placed on the Heavy Hitter's branch. Later, when the Superhuman Registration Act was abolished, Prodigy decided to reform the Slingers.
