The S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mobile command center and world headquarters.
History[]
Earth-616[]
Origin[]
During the creation of the extra-governmental intelligence & defense agency known simply as S.H.I.E.L.D., an argument arose among the various signatory nations that comprised the United Nations over where to position the organization's world headquarters as each nation feared the idea of it being built within their own borders due to the fact that whichever nation that agreed to host S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters would become a target for terrorist organizations such as HYDRA. A greater fear among the signatory nations then the idea of becoming a target for terrorists was the domestic political fallout that each nation's governments would suffer through if such an attack was successful.
In response to these concerns, Tony Stark, whose company had been commissioned to design most of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s early technology and weapons, proposed the creation of an aircraft carrier capable of independent powered flight to be used as the agencies' headquarters which the members of the United Nations agreed to be a preferable alternative.
To assist him in the creation of the this massive project, Tony enlisted the help of Mister Fantastic and the Mutant Forge who recently quit the X-Men. The 3 scientists designed the Helicarrier to have all the standard functions of a normal aircraft carrier while also being able to house entire wings of fighters and other various aircrafts. To assist S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fighters in fighter planes and its ground troops in various types of combat, Tony and his compatriots equipped the Helicarrier with many high tech weapons and artillery, including an intercontinental ballistic missile.
The "Iron Carrier"[]
Following his establishment as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the conclusion of the superhero civil war, Tony Stark ordered a new helicarrier in the style of his Iron Man armor to be created to replace the original as the organization's headquarters. This new red and gold Helicarrier's career with S.H.I.E.L.D. was short lived as it was commandeered by the Intelligencia following an attack by the Red Hulk and subsequently destroyed forcing Tony to reinstate the original Helicarrier.
The Rise of H.A.M.M.E.R.[]
During the Skrull's invasion of Earth, a Skrull infiltrator posing as Tony Stark's butler Jarvis infected the Hellicarrier with an alien computer virus that completely disabled the Helicarrier forcing it to crash land in the Bermuda Triangle. Shortly after the Helicarrier's crash landing, Maria Hill was forced to blow up in order to escape the Skrull infiltrators who were attempting to apprehend her.
Following the conclusion of the Skrull invasion, the remains of the Helicarrier were salvaged by Norman Osborn, so that he might use them in the contraction of his own H.A.M.M.E.R. Hellicarrier which would serve as the mobile headquarters of Norman's new H.A.M.M.E.R. organization.
Norman's H.A.M.M.E.R. carrier made it's debut during the Siege of Asgard as the flagship of H.A.M.M.E.R.'s attack force. Unfortunately, the H.A.M.M.E.R. Helicarrier's tour of duty was brief as Tony had to crash it into the Void in order to end his rampage.
Reinstatement[]
Following the Serpent War, Steve Rogers ordered the creation of a new Helicarrier which he dubbed the "Iliad" to serve as the headquarters for both S.H.I.E.L.D. and his Black Ops Avengers Team.
