Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home and is the thirty-second installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was released on December 17th, 2021, with a re-release entitled Spider-Man: No Way Home: The More Fun Stuff Version released on September 2nd, 2022. A sequel is in development.
Plot
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange's help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Production
- On June 26th, 2016, Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Studios announced Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios were committed to making more Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[1]
- On June 14th, 2017, Tom Holland announced Sony Pictures were developing a trilogy of Spider-Man films, calling the two sequels Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.[2]
- On June 19th, 2019, Amy Pascal confirmed Spider-Man 3 was in development.[3]
- On August 20th, it was announced that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures had severed their partnership due to a financial dispute, from Marvel Studios wanting to earn more profits from the Spider-Man films. As a result, Spider-Man was removed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[4]
- On September 27th, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they had come to an arrangement, and that Spider-Man would continue on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[5]
- On April 24th, 2020, the film was delayed to November 5th, 2021.[6]
- On July 23rd, the film was delayed to December 17th, 2021.[7]
- On November 21st, Michael Giacchino confirmed he would compose the film.[8]
- On February 23rd, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon posted on their social medias the fake titles: Spider-Man: Phone Home, Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker and Spider-Man: Home Slice, respectively. The next day, the real title was announced as Spider-Man: No Way Home.[9][10][11]
- On June 10th, 2022, it was announced an extended cut of the film would be released, titled Spider-Man: No Way Home: The More Fun Stuff Version in the United States and Canada on September 2nd, with more countries to follow. [12]
Casting
- On October 1st, 2020, it was reported that Jamie Foxx has been cast in the film as Electro, reprising the role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.[13]
- On October 8th, it was reported that Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast in the film as Doctor Strange.[14]
- On December 8th, it was reported that Alfred Molina has been cast in the film as Doctor Octopus, reprising the role from Spider-Man 2.[15] Molina would later confirm his casting on April 16th, 2021.[16]
- On December 9th, it was reported Charlie Cox had been cast in the film as Daredevil.[17]
- On December 14th, it was reported that Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church were cast in the film as Green Goblin and Sandman, reprising the roles from Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3, respectively.[18]
- On April 16th, 2021, it was reported that Jon Favreau had been cast in the film as Happy Hogan.[19]
- On April 22nd, it was reported that Paula Newsome had been cast in the film in an unknown role.[20] It would later be reported on October 24th that she would portray the MIT Assistant Vice Chancellor.[21]
- On April 26th, J.B. Smoove confirmed he would appear in the film as Julius Dell.[22]
Filming
- On January 16th, 2020, it was reported the film was expected to begin filming in July and last until November. The filming locations were reported to be Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Iceland. The working title was also reported to be Serenity Now.[23]
- On October 6th, it was reported that filming would take place in Queens on October 16th.[24]
- On March 26th, 2021, it was announced that filming had wrapped.[25]
Trivia
- The teaser trailer held the record for the most viewed trailer in the first 24 hours with 355 million views, beating Avengers: Endgame which had 289 million views.[26] The record was broken in 2024 by Deadpool & Wolverine, which received 365 million views in 24 hours.[27]
- In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 directly mentions the events of the No Way Home, stating: "And don't even get me started on Doctor Strange and the little nerd back on Earth-199999."[28]
