Plot[]

Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is attending a science expo hosted by Dr. Otto Octavius (aka Dr. Octopus), where he shows off his new machine. As Octavius is demonstrating his new invention, a couple of backstage security guards are attacked by what seems to be Spider-Man. Peter sees what's going on and heads on out to stop the impostor. As everyone is leaving, the Spider-Man impostor takes Octavius' device. Eddie Brock, Parker's rival at the Daily Bugle, begins to take pictures of the situation, but the Spider-Man impostor destroys Brock's camera and runs away. Angry that Daily Bugle head editor J. Jonah Jameson will fire him, Brock begins to lose control of himself and the Venom symbiote begins to take hold of him. Meanwhile, Dr. Octavius begins to deploy a fog over the entire island of Manhattan.

Peter, dressed as Spider-Man, heads out into the city to find some answers. Along the way, Black Cat comes along to tell him that a bank is being robbed by the Jade Syndicate. After taking care of the robbers, Peter calls Jonah about the robbery but Jonah tells him to call the police about Scorpion attacking him. Spider-Man rushes over to the Bugle and stops Scorpion from hurting Jonah. Soon, the police come to attack Spider-Man for the science expo scandal. While running away, Spider-Man meets fellow hero, Daredevil, and tells him that he was framed and he's innocent. Daredevil believes Spider-Man and goes around to tell his innocence. After escaping a police chopper, Black Cat meets with Spider-Man and tells him that Venom has control of the Times Square jumbotron and that Rhino is attacking a power plant. At the jumbotron, Venom tells everyone that he has taken Mary Jane Watson hostage. Black Cat tries to talk to Spider-Man out of stopping Rhino and go after Mary Jane, but Spider-Man denies the request.

At the power plant, Rhino badly injures Black Cat and battles Spider-Man, but is defeated. As the authorities come along, Rhino is taken away by Dr. Octavius and Black Cat is taken away by two paramedics, who are actually henchmen of Dr. Octopus. After having a short talk with the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man begins his search for Mary Jane. Along the way, Venom comes along and taunts Spider-Man. After a brief battle, Spider-Man follows Venom into the sewers. In the sewers, Spider-Man comes across giant lizards from one of Dr. Curt Connors' (aka the Lizard) failed experiments. Soon, Spider-Man finds Mary Jane tied and held hostage. After Spider-Man defeats Venom, Venom begins to blame Spider-Man for what he did back at the expo. But Spider-Man tells Venom that it was an impostor. Convinced by Spider-Man, Venom and Spider-Man begin to work together to find the impostor. They begin by searching the Daily Bugle.

At the Bugle, Venom makes some puns, and begins to sense that his symbiote counterpart, Carnage, is nearby and abandons Spider-Man to go fight Carnage. Soon, hundreds of symbiotes begin to invade the Bugle and Spider-Man begins to find where they are coming from. He heads to the basement of the Bugle where he finds the Spider-Man impostor. The impostor is the super-villain Mysterio. After defeating Mysterio, Spider-Man demands to know who his boss is and where he is. Mysterio mentions a warehouse that houses tons of symbiotes.

After having a little encounter with Punisher, Spider-Man finds Warehouse 65. As Spider-Man makes his way through, he finds a passageway that takes him to an underwater base. There, he finds Black Cat, sets her free, stops the fog, and goes after the man responsible for everything. Spider-Man soon discovers that the mastermind is none other than Dr. Octopus and his assistant Carnage. Spider-Man takes out Dr. Octopus and Carnage. After defeating Carnage, the symbiote rejects Cletus Kasady and begins to attach to Dr. Octopus, who is now a symbiote monster with tentacles. As soon as Spider-Man runs away, the base begins to explode. After saving Dr. Octopus from the fire and symbiote, Spider-Man is soon rescued by Captain America and Dr. Octopus is arrested. After saving the world, Spider-Man, Punisher, Captain America, and Daredevil are playing cards while Black Cat and Human Torch are dancing. In prison, Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, and a Jade Syndicate thug are playing cards as well while Doc Ock is banging his head against the jail cell's metal bars in defeat.

Trivia[]

  • In the cheats menu, if you enter in curse words, Spider-Man will pop up and change the words into nice words.
  • In the cheats menu, enter the following code: GBHSRSPM. Once you have entered this code, you will enable What If? mode. You can play the entire campaign but will encounter major differences from the original campaign.
    • This cheat does not work for the Nintendo 64 version of the game.
  • If you enter EEL NATS in the cheats menu, you will unlock everything.
  • Throughout the game, there are billboards on buildings advertising Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Neversoft, this game's developer, also developed the Tony Hawk series. There's even one part in the helicopter chase level where if you climb the Tony Hawk billboard, Spider-Man will mention that he once skated with Tony Hawk. This is actually a reference to Spider-Man being a playable character in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.
  • The reason why there is a "fog" below the buildings is because the developers did not have the technology or time to render an entire city.
