"So what are you some kind of collector?
I'm "the" collector.
"
— Hulk and The Collector

Taneleer Tivan, better known as the Collector, is the self proclaimed universe's greatest collector. The Collector searches the universe for the rarest, greatest, and most unique specimens he can find, collects them, and destroys their place of origin in order to make them priceless.

History[]

Not much is known about Taneleer's early history, but he had an older brother, the Grandmaster, who was much more obsessed with games and always beat him in his games.

He first appears in "The Collector", where he collects Earth's heros as he deems them valuable and prepares to destroy the planet. However, Spider-Man and the Hulk manage to avoid getting put in stasis tubes and fight him and his probes, which he sent to recapture them. After watching all the destruction the two do on the ship, he instead changes his mind and tries to destroy them as they are no longer in "mint" condition. Unfortunately, he fails to stop them and his ship is heavily damaged while the heros of Earth escape from his ship.

He later appears in "Contest of Champions", where his brother challenges him for control of New York City. Taneleer chooses the Heros of Earth while the Grandmaster chooses the villains. Taneleer chooses Spider-Man in almost every fight since he is aware of his intelligence as he avoided being captured and damaged his ship at the same time. In one of the challenges, he chooses Spider-Man, Agent Venom and Iron Spider to fight against his brother's set team. He later adds Thor and increases the wager to control of New York City. Spider-Man, along with Venom and Iron Spider sneak out of the fight using SHIELD's clones and free the hostages the Grandmaster has kept abroad his ship. The Grandmaster realizes after breaking one of them that he was tricked and his ship is destroyed.

Spider-Man then finds a depressed Taneleer and asks him what is wrong since they won. The Grandmaster appears and tells them that his three villains have beaten his selection of heros, and now has won New York City. Spider-Man tries to convince Taneleer to assist him and how his brother has always used tricks to confuse him, to some avail. After Spider-Man issues a new challenge to the Grandmaster, he agrees to his terms only if the two of them fight his team. Taneleer tries to convince Spider-Man to call it off, but after some persuasion he reluctantly agrees to. He defends himself from his brother's team using his powers, and after they are defeated Spider-Man calls for a new challenge where the Grandmaster will fight his new team for everyone inside New York.

At the battle site, Taneleer asks Spider-Man who the woman is that tried to protect Spider-Man. He tells him that they have a "special relationship". He seems to have softened up considerably, due to Spider-Man's words. Spider-Man asks him if he can stop collecting from Earth, which he agrees to. After fighting the Grandmaster, who is too powerful because of his staff, Spider-Man and Taneleer are the only two left. After attacking his brother as he is powerless without his staff, he snaps it in half, winning the wagers. Later on, he says the same words his brother told him about how second place is the first loser, to his brother's annoyance. Due to Spider-Man's words, Taneleer decides to find a new interest in relationships and connections, and honours his word to Spider-Man. His brother follows behind him and demands a rematch, but Taneleer tells him he is quitting the hobby of collecting completely against his protests, and the two leave on his still intact ship.
