"Been to many worlds, but none of them this strange. Understood feelings before, but simple feelings - like colors, bold and bright. Happy. Sad. Angry. Then... met Spider-Man. Feelings got complicated. Learned guilt. Also the first time I felt fear. Felt agony. Learned feeling: Betrayal. Learned first words they called me. Monster. Parasite. Bad.[...] Fells good to be a hero. Did do bad things, too. Can't deny. Mac Gargan was bad. Thoughts like poison stingers. It was a thrill to kill. Knew it was bad. Didn't care. Gargan made it easy. Got to punish Gargan for what he did. He was evil and afraid. Lee Price was not afraid. He was a soldier. Hurt and desperate. I trusted him. Talked to him. But Lee was too strong. Didn't want to talk. Didn't want to be a hero. Wanted power. Couldn't stop the bad things he was doing. Lee was bad. Hurt me. Eddie hurts me too, sometimes, but Eddie is different. Eddie never means to.[...] if Eddie is good, why do we disagree? if disagree... am I a monster? parasite? bad? can't be bad. Wasn't bad with Flash. Fought with heroes. Was a hero. Trained another symbiote. Got to learn. Got to teach. Flash called me partner. Was never afraid like Spider-Man. But Flash is gone... and heroes don't hide. Not from anything... especially their mistakes." |
The Venom symbiote (of Earth-616), often referred to as simply "The Symbiote," is the first of many alien, goo like, parasites that requires a host to bond with for survival.
It appears on multiple occasions in Marvel Comics, mostly those featuring Spider-Man.
History[]
Peter Parker[]
During the events of "Secret Wars" While on Battleworld Spider-Man damaged his costume in combat and was directed to a facility where he could find a new costume. Spider-Man found the prison module the symbiote had been trapped in instead. He activated the machine which released the symbiote in the form of a black liquid. When Spider-Man touched the liquid, it covered his body and, reacting to Spider-Man's thoughts about the costume worn by the second Spider-Woman, formed a new costume. Peter found out the costume could mimic street clothes and provided a seemingly inexhaustible and stronger, and more supply of webbing.
Once back on Earth, Spider-Man learned the costume was a sentient alien symbiote that wished to fuse permanently with him and often controlled his body while he slept. With the aid of Mr. Fantastic and the Human Torch, Spider-Man discovered the symbiote was vulnerable to sound and flame, and he used sonic waves to remove it and flames to scare it into a containment module.
The symbiote escaped and found its way to Peter Parker's closet and disguised itself as a spare red and blue costume. It attempted to forcibly bond itself to Spider-Man.
Later the Vulturions attacked and Spider-Man forced him to take them all to a church tower. The Bells rang to sound the hour, the symbiote felt the pain. The clanging of the church bells and Spider-Man's rejection of the symbiote weakened the alien. The symbiote, using its remaining strength, it slithered away from Spider-Man and the Bells. The rejection of the symbiote left it extremely bitter toward Spider-Man, a trait it would share with its future hosts. Especially, Edward Brock who became Venom.
The Black Cat thought the black costume was sexier and made Spider-Man a cloth version of the suit. Spider-Man switched back and forth between the two suits for some time until Venom comes looking for him. By this time, Spider-Man had married Mary Jane Watson-Parker, and Venom scared her horribly. She asked him to stop wearing the black costume, and he returned to his original costume.
Appearances[]
The first appearance of this symbiote was in Secret Wars #8 where Spider-Man's costume was damaged in battle, and needed a new one. The symbiote crawled up Spider-Man's hand, and formed a brand new all black costume that increased all of his spider abilities.
Many issues later the symbiote was gotten rid of using church bells, and later crawled over to Eddie Brock sensing his hate for Spider-Man, the two bonded, and named themselves, Venom, being the poison in Peter Parker/Spider-Man's life since the symbiote was bonded to Peter for so long, it was able to copy his spider abilities, and give them to Eddie, except much stronger.
Also, since this symbiote was bonded to Spider-Man for so long, it knew his secret identity, and as a result Spider-Man's spider-sense can not be triggered by the Venom symbiote.
